I just got back from Disney World and will be blogging about all of the parks and experiences, starting with The Dark Side 10K and half-marathon!
We did A LOT in a little time during our recent Disney vacation. We went to Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and participated in RunDisney races. I will blog about each day, but I wanted to start with the reason why we went to Disney – to participate in The Dark Side Half-Marathon weekend. This was our third year in a row doing this race, and I think it was the best one yet. My husband and I did the half-marathon together, but he also did the 10K the day prior.
My husband participated in the First Order Challenge.
The First Order Challenge is where you do a 10K on Saturday morning and then the half-marathon on Sunday morning. You receive medals for the 10K and half-marathon and also a special First Order Challenge medal. I have to admit that I was a little jealous because I loved the Kylo Ren challenge medal, but at least I will still have it in my hosue. Being the loving and supportive wife that I am, I woke up at 3:00 AM Saturday morning and went with him to the 10K race and waited for him at the finish line.
It was my first time being a spectator, and it was exciting.
There was a food and beverage stand where I got some breakfast while I waited for the race to start. Once it started, I went to the bleachers to wait for the race finishers. They had a DJ playing music and stormtroopers waiting at the finish line. The race started at 5:30 AM, and the first finisher crossed the line about 36 minutes after the start time.
I watched and cheered for the wheelchair racer, first male, and first female were announced. The racers initially came in a slow trickle, but soon there were hundreds of people crossing the finish line. My husband started in the last corral so I knew it would be a while before he crossed the finish line. I was checking on my husband’s progress through the RunDisney tracking when I saw it had him at the 5K marker for several minutes. Then it said that the tracking was paused because he didn’t make it through the 5K check mark. WHAT??? My husband is a much better runner than I am, and he couldn’t make it to the 5K mark??? I was pretty concerned, wondering if something happened to him on the route. I decided to check Find My Friends to see exactly where he was on the route.
EPCOT. It said he as in Epcot.
Meaning, he was getting close to the finish line. I breathed a sigh of relief that everything was OK and went to get a better view of the finish line. It was probably 10 minutes or less that I saw him cross the finish line. He told me that parts of the course were pretty tight, especially since he started in the last corral where a lot of people walk or do walk/run intervals. He wanted the run the 10K so he had to go around or in grassy areas, and he didn’t run through the tracking at the 5K mark because he went around it to avoid all the people stopping and walking. After congratulating him and taking pictures were his awesome medal, we headed back to my sister’s house to relax.
Stay tuned for my next blog – The Dark Side Half-Marathon, and my experience running that race for the third time.
